Last
Fall, the Rotary Club of Salida honored local businessman Pete Bakker for his
community activism in community beautification. Then District Governor, Dorothy
On August 15, Pete was honored again by Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ray Simon, Modesto Mayor Carmen Sabatino, and representatives of Senator Chuck Poochigian, Senator Jeff Denham, and Assemblyman Dave Cogdill. Pete was cited by all for his vision and effort in carrying out a beautification effort, the new Modesto Arch that welcomes visitors at Briggsmore Ave and Sisk Road, a busy intersection immediately adjacent to Highway 99. The community has also received a federal grant for 1.3 million dollars, a direct result of Pete's initiatives, to continue with the beautification of the other corners of that intersection. Former Supervisor Nock Blom was on hand to praise his friend Pete for his ability to see the problem, for driving others to acknowledge it, and for committing his time and resources to addressing it. Pete and his wife Helen, in turn, honored many individuals from the community who were instrumental in getting the new Welcome Arch constructed. Presenting large plaques with an image of the arch to each, Pete acknowledged their help and support for the success of this project. A crowd of interested onlookers and local dignitaries were present along with a wide range of media representatives. |
