District Governor-Elect Dave Gallagher traveled in June 2003 to Africa. The situation there is dire. The preponderance of AIDS in the population is such that children are orphaned at alarming rates, and there is very little in the way of services to help these children.

In the self-described "Where's Waldo" photo at the left, Dave wanted us to know he was the tall one. When last seen, he was still rejoicing in that thought.

The children in the picture are AIDS orphans and kids that are rescued from difficult situations. The school in the background is at TEMAC or Teenage Mothers and Girls Association of Kenya.

Dave has been working on a World Community Services project in Africa that is destined to involve the entire district. In the photo at the right, Dave's wife Diane is teaching the "beginners class at Agape Boys Home. The boys have been recently rescued from the street and for many of them this is their first experience with school. Dave will be telling us more about this World Community Service need as he has an opportunity to meet with us at various club and district events. We'll also continue to develop more information for this web page so come back to visit again.

The boys above who have been rescued are the lucky ones.

Many children like the boys to the left are not even lucky enough to live in an orphanage. The streets are their homes, and learning is not done in a classroom with caring people teaching beneficial lessons.

More facilities are needed to address this issue, and Rotary can partner with others in improving these children's lives
