               Thanksgiving in Belgium

[NOTE: we got a chance to "eavesdrop" on a Thanksgiving Email exchange between D5220 Ambassadorial Scholarship Chairman Don Escallier and current Ambassadorial Scholar Angela Bruce-Raeburn. Peek in with their permission. The text has been rearranged in chronological order for easier reading. webmaster@rotary5220.org]

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Just a quick note, as I was thinking about you and your family spending an American holiday in Belgium!!

It brings to my mind the scenario of you shopping for a turkey, cranberries, etc, etc.  Did you??

I enjoyed your first report, and I'm sure you are having a terrific year so far.

Keep in touch.

Don Escallier

Thank you for the Thanksgiving Wish but it was just another day here. Nothing. Work and school. I was so sad. I love thanksgiving and I missed all the things that go with it especially tomorrow which is the day we bought our tree traditionally since we have been married in 1993. So this is the first year in 11 years that this was not the case.

I have to tell you that I am having a Thanksgiving Saturday night American style and I invited some people from school who have never celebrated Thanksgiving. Some Belgians, some Africans-Congo, Nigeria, some Jamaicans, a Swiss, a Belarussian, a Lithuanian, a Greek,  2 Turks, a guy from Ecuador and two Canadians. Oh yeah and a British guy. Tell me is that international or what? I walked all over Brussels today looking for a whole turkey apparentlly this is not easy to find. The people looked at me as though I was crazy. One butcher said it's not Christmas as yet what do you want a turkey for? I said ..It's Thanksgiving Sir!!!!!

Thank you for thinking about me. I am having a good time. Have made some interesting friends. My mother is taking french classes. My children have adjusted quite well to the Belgian environment. It is quite special let me tell you. My husband will be here in 3 weeks. I went to a Rotary luncheon for all the scholars about 2 weeks ago with Mr. Peeters. He is very kind.

Well how did you like Hawaii? I wish there was sun in Belgium.

Will talk with you. Angela

One more thing.....I did buy a 20lb turkey, and I found cranberries. I will be making a cranberry -pear chutney., macaroni pie, stuffing made from wild rice with bing cherries, ..I think it will be fun for my classmates. Plus I downloaded a history of thanksgiving from the internet which I will give everyone a copy when they come in.

They see it on TV all the time and so they are excited to come.

So I will represent us well.

Angela
