District Literacy Chairman Carol Kennedy has ideas for your club to consider when developing Literacy projects:

A Month of Literacy Projects

  1. Have a Rotary “Read In” in elementary school classrooms.

  2. Organize a grandparent reading program.

  3. Buy books for libraries.

  4. Buy dictionaries for all third graders.

  5. Buy a thesaurus for each sixth grader.

  6. Purchase a rocking chair for the school libraries for volunteers who read to kids.

  7. Purchase “Big Books” for Project Hope.

  8. Purchase magnetic letters for Project Hope.

  9. Sponsor a radio or television promotion for reading to your children.

  10. Sponsor a community “Turn off the TV and read” weekend.

  11. Have a used book sale.

  12. Support book clubs.

  13. Exchange books within the club.

  14. Donate books to classrooms.

  15. Support school contests for number of pages read.

  16. Give awards for the best readers.

  17. Give scholarships directed at reading instruction.

  18. Give scholarships for further education for teachers of reading.

  19. Supply big books for preschool literacy programs.

  20. Celebrate well-known authors.

  21. Send used textbooks to overseas projects.

  22. Sponsor an art contest celebrating famous illustrators.

  23. Sponsor a children’s 24 hour read-in.

  24. Feature new books in the local newspaper.

  25. Sponsor author visits.

  26. Give books as speaker gifts at your Rotary meetings.

  27. Buy books on tape sets for local schools.

  28. Sponsor a bookmobile.

  29. Volunteer at the library.

  30. Write a book about the local Rotary club and it’s projects.
