In accordance
with Section 13.020.4 of the RI Bylaws, a candidate shall be suggested for
nomination by their own Club. The suggestion shall be submitted in the form
of a resolution adopted at a regular meeting of the club naming the
suggested candidate. The resolution shall be certified by the club
secretary. A club may suggest only one of its members as a candidate.
The candidate
must meet these requirements: (a) The Rotarian must be a member in good
standing of a functioning club in the district; (b) The Rotarian must have
full qualifications for such membership in the strict application of the
provisions therefore, and the integrity of the Rotarians’ classification
must be without question; (c) The Rotarian must have served as president of
a club for a full term or be a charter president of a club having served the
full term from the date of charter to 30 June, provided that this period is
at least six months; (d) The Rotarian must demonstrate willingness,
commitment, and ability, physically and otherwise, to fulfill the duties and
responsibilities of the office of governor; (e) The Rotarian must
demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties, and responsibilities of
governor as prescribed in the RI Bylaws; and (f) The Rotarian shall have
been a member of one or more Rotary clubs for at least five years in order
that when governor-nominee assumes the office of governor he/she has been a
Rotarian for at least seven years.
Any Rotarian who
engages in campaigning or canvassing for the office may be subject to
disqualification.
It is the
intention of the District to seek out and nominate the best-qualified person
for the office of governor.
Candidates shall
submit 3 copies of their application and an important part of that
application will be a resume.
Biographical data
that should be included in the resume is: (a) Name of candidate, name and
location of club, number of years a Rotarian, classification, name of firm
or former firm, position in firm or former firm, significant Rotary meetings
attended in the last five years, current position(s) or assignment(s) in
Rotary, former position(s) or assignment(s) in Rotary; (b) Special Rotary
services or particular Rotary activities in which the candidate has been
engaged (i.e., what the candidate has done to advance Rotary activities; (c)
Most significant honors or achievements in business and professional
activities; and (d) Most significant honors or achievements in civic and
public service activities.
In keeping
with past customary procedure in the District, it is suggested that the
candidate select a spokesperson to speak for them before the Nominating
Committee on the day the Committee selects a governor-nominee. The
spokesperson will meet with the Committee immediately before the Committee
interviews the candidate.
District governors-nominee are selected to serve as district governor 12 to
24 months before taking office. During this period, governors-nominee should
learn about their district and its clubs and begin to work closely with
their district leaders to support effective clubs.
Responsibilities of governors-nominee include:
Analyzing districts' strengths and weaknesses in terms of public
relations, membership, The Rotary Foundation, district events, and RI
programs and using background material provided by past governor, current
governor, and governor-elect and RI resources
Reviewing district and club leadership plans
Attending district meetings at the invitation of the governor or
governor-elect
Participating in district committees or other activities, as suggested by
the governor or governor-elect
Selecting a site for the district conference during year as governor
To
create greater continuity within the district leadership team, the
governor-nominee should work closely with the current governor and
governor-elect, especially on activities that last more than one Rotary
year, such as strategic planning, district appointments, and district
service projects.
Governors-nominee should consider:
Reviewing the district organizational structure
Understanding the functions of district committees
Governors-nominee should also consider fiscal responsibilities, such as
managing district finances, practicing good stewardship, and ensuring
compliance with local laws, including tax and nonprofit, where applicable.
The

Good
communication helps to foster effective clubs, achieve goals, coordinate
club visits, encourage membership growth, increase support for The Rotary
Foundation, and promote the district's work to Rotarians and the
community.
Governors-nominee should become familiar with the district's current
communication plan and think about how to best communicate with district and
club leaders by:
Navigating the district's website and analyzing how to use it to
communicate to Rotarians and the public
Reviewing past monthly letters and considering topics to address
Reviewing club websites to become familiar with topics clubs are
discussing
Understanding how the district and its clubs work with local media to
promote their service efforts to the community
The

observe and which clubs to visit in order to become more familiar with the
district.
